The Rise of Buckethead

the heart of a boy – the soul of a robot

About Me

I wont bother trying to tell you about Buckethead. That will come in time, and with the articles, news and other posts here.

I will take this moment you are reading to tell you a bit about me:

I recently [re]started taking guitar lessons. I have had a guitar for over 20 years, and simply suck at it. I can riff, play some notes, but I could never grasp the technical dexterity needed to become really good.

Regardless, I was always a drummer, and played in several bands. I decided to stop playing drums, because I could never find the right band to play with that I could express myself with. Maybe there was no such band or group of people on the planet? Who knows. I never hooked up with anyone I thought who would understand what I wanted out of music.

The first time I heard of Buckethead was from my first guitar teacher. He started playing some extremely fast runs, and crazy bends, and notes. He said “that’s that Buckethead stuff”. I was like “who the fuck is that?” And that was the end of it. I figured, some dude is named Buckethead? I never thought about it after.

Then, Buckethead joined Guns and Roses, and that was the first time I had seen a photo of him. I thought – wow.. interesting. And heard a song or two. All I thought was – this is not the Guns and Roses I knew, and that was that. The song was good, but the difference from albums before didn’t interest me.

A few months go (April 2010) I found a video of Buckethead after a friend mentioned a song called Jordan to another friend of ours who started taking guitar lessons. Watching that video, my head fell off.  I had no words to describe such a sound, or personality or persona. I am rarely speechless. This time, I was.

Since then, I have listened to nearly only Buckethead’s music. Sure, I listen to my old favorites, but… there is nothing that compares to the tones coming from that dudes fingers.  I can’t explain it to this day. All I know is… I finally found someone who can express an instrument as I would like to.  If I were to ever meet Buckethead, I would likely have a friggin’ heart attack.

It is because of Buckethead’s music that I decided to begin guitar school again. Luckily, I found my guitar teacher from years ago – and wouldn’t you know it? He is a Buckethead fan.  Life can only get better from here.
